Get to Know Jeana

Jeana Godoy knew she wanted to pursue a career in medicine from an early age. Her interest in biology and working as an emergency room medical assistant in high school made it the best path for her to follow. She also yearned for a tight-knit community like she had in Guam where she grew up. UT San Antonio provided the sense of community and academic rigor she was looking for, so she chose to attend and study biology.

Academic Support

During her time at UT San Antonio, Jeana took labs in the fields of genetics, microbiology and biology, and found that they greatly enhanced her coursework. Additionally, she found support in tutoring and career services on campus. Jeana was able to return the favor by supporting her fellow students as a science mentor and committee chair with the College of Science Student Success Center where she helped her peers find UT San Antonio resources, prepare for their careers and find a sense of belonging.

Hands-on Experience

As a student, Jeana participated in the HONEY Pathway Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) program. Her team’s research centered on the antibacterial effects of Manuka honey, a special type of honey made in Australia and New Zealand. Outside of UT San Antonio, she was vice president of the Brain Exercise Initiative (BEI), a volunteer organization that works to fight Alzheimer’s and other degenerative brain diseases. She also works as the co-director of the Honeycomb Connection (HCC), an organization that cultivates opportunities in research, volunteer work and academics that relate to beekeeping, honeybees and honey.

Pursuing a Dream

Jeana’s goal of joining the medical field is nearly within reach. She plans to pursue graduate studies in medical laboratory sciences, and eventually attend medical school to become a physician.
