Why Pursue a Graduate Certificate in Digital Humanities
The Graduate Certificate in Digital Humanities focuses on how technology can be used to study, preserve and share human culture, history, literature, languages and more. Through a combination of practical training and interdisciplinary learning, students gain experience using digital tools to organize, analyze, visualize and communicate information in meaningful and accessible ways.
The program prepares students to work with data and digital technologies while considering their cultural and ethical impacts. These skills are increasingly valuable in schools and universities, museums, libraries, archives, government agencies, nonprofit organizations, media and publishing, and technology-related fields.
Experiential Learning
The Digital Humanities certificate program is distinguished by its affiliation with several initiatives such as the Transborder Digital Humanities Center-Consortium. This Mellon Foundation-supported initiative advances innovative research and training in digital humanities and public humanities. Through this partnership, students have access to fellowship opportunities that support projects focused on multilingual and translingual, transnational and transborder studies.
The certificate also provides opportunities with the CEDISH-PATH Internship Program, which partners with the Texas Heritage Project at the Center for Archaeological Research and the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park. These unique opportunities allow students to apply digital and public humanities methods in real-world settings while contributing to interdisciplinary scholarship, cultural heritage preservation and community engagement.

Capstone Project
Students have the option to complete a hybrid thesis or capstone project that integrates traditional research with digital scholarships. Depending on their interests and disciplinary background, students may incorporate digital humanities methods and analysis throughout a written thesis, discussing the digital tools, data or technologies used in each chapter. Alternatively, students may develop a hybrid thesis that consist of a pilot digital humanities project—such as a digital archive, website, interactive map, data visualization, virtual exhibit or multimedia platform—and accompany it with a written analysis that explains the project’s research questions, methodology, design, implementation and scholarly contributions. A third option is to undertake an internship with one of the initiatives listed above (or any other initiative subject to be approved by the dh graduate certificate coordinator) and spend a semester gaining hands-on experience in digital humanities through project-based work. These flexible approaches allows students to combine academic research with practical digital skills while producing work that can engage both scholarly and public audiences.
In-demand skills include data visualization, web development, digital multimodal storytelling, GIS mapping, UX research, project management and digital content creation. As AI, immersive technologies and data-driven decision-making reshape industries, employers are seeking professionals who can apply emerging technologies ethically and communicate across diverse audiences.
Other emerging trends include digital preservation across the globe, open-access or private scholarship, immersive technologies, multilingual digital communication, and the use of data-driven approaches to solve complex social and cultural challenges.
