Students seeking reinstatement must apply for admission and submit all admission requirements, including the Petition for Reinstatement Form, by the posted readmission deadline.
Late applications will not be accepted. Reinstatement following a dismissal is not guaranteed; the reinstatement petitions and student records undergo a thorough review by the academic college to determine if the student’s return to UTSA is approved. Applicants should put their best foot forward when reapplying by ensuring all submitted forms are accurate, on time, and contain thoughtful, comprehensive answers explaining the situation.
Students who have been academically dismissed from UTSA may petition for reinstatement after sitting out the required time:
- First Dismissals – Sit out for one semester
- Second Dismissals – Sit out for one calendar year
Students who have been dismissed three times are not eligible for reinstatement into the University.
Please note: The review process will not begin until the student’s application file is complete. Remember – late reinstatement applications and petitions will not be considered.
Students on academic dismissal from UTSA may attend other institutions. A transcript with all completed and in-progress coursework must be included in the reinstatement packet. Grades earned at other institutions cannot be used to improve the UTSA grade point average (GPA), and the GPA for all coursework taken during the UTSA dismissal period must be a 2.0 or higher to meet the admission requirements.
Petition for Reinstatement Decisions
Reinstatement decisions are based on the student’s prior academic record and information submitted as part of the reinstatement packet. Applicants who believe that supplemental items will help convey information about their situation and/or qualifications are encouraged to submit such items with the applications to ensure consideration by the committee.
A number of factors are considered when making petition for reinstatement decisions including:
Items reviewed include the UTSA GPA, major GPA, number of courses completed, number of major courses attempted, number of academic dismissals, and the percentage of degree completion.
Choosing your major is a big decision for your ultimate goals and career trajectory. However, sometimes a different major may be a better fit. Be sure to apply for the major that you want to pursue – especially if it is different from the previously declared major. Changing your major during the return semester is not permitted.
Applicants with special circumstances that have impacted their prior UTSA performance such as illness, personal experiences, or increased work hours, should address these situations in the reinstatement packet. Documentation such as death certificates or hospital discharge paperwork should also be included when appropriate.
We understand that things happen and life can drastically change; applicants are encouraged to illustrate why the upcoming semester will be different, highlighting plans to ensure a better work life balance, a change in childcare, or the implementation of a stronger support system. Students should also detail strategies for academic success, i.e. meeting with tutors, asking questions in class, structured study times, etc.
The grades from all coursework completed after the UTSA dismissal semester must meet the 2.0 minimum GPA requirement. If the grades average at 1.99 or lower, the reinstatement packet will automatically be denied. All coursework must be declared on the reinstatement petition and transcripts for completed and in-progress work must be sent to UTSA Admissions prior to the packet deadline.
The review process for reinstatement packets is not quick; it may take two weeks to two months before a decision is reached.
