Get to Know Emily

Emily Holder made great strides at UT San Antonio on her path to becoming a researcher, thanks to the affordability the university offers. As one of UT San Antonio’s first undergraduate neuroscience majors, Emily found several opportunities to grow as a researcher.

Securing an Education

There were many reasons Emily decided to enroll at UT San Antonio, but what stood out the most was the Bold Promise program, which offers qualifying students fully covered tuition and mandatory fees for four academic years. Thanks to getting her costs covered, Emily was able to give her full attention to her studies and find opportunities such as becoming a Goldwater Scholar. The Goldwater Scholarship is one of the most competitive scholarships in the nation for college students seeking a research career in science, mathematics or engineering.

Engaging in Research

Emily took advantage of every research opportunity she could find at UT San Antonio. Her first experience was in the Macpherson Lab, where she studied taste receptor cells in the brain. Her research at Dell Medical School with the Women in Neuroscience nonprofit organization developed her data analysis skills and broadened her perspective on the field of neuroscience. She participated in the McNair Scholars Program and served as director of the COS Rising Researchers Pre-Research Training Program. All these experiences will help Emily as she pursues her Ph.D. in Neuroscience and continues her journey as a researcher.
