The Road to UT San Antonio

At first, Grace Johnson studied music at a junior college. However, she soon began to feel that this wasn’t the right path for her, leading her to transfer to UT San Antonio. As a roadrunner, she found the perfect fit for her college education. The psychology program’s wide area of study allowed her to explore the possibility of art therapy while also diving in to the scientific nature of the field. UT San Antonio’s location also appealed to her because she had family living in San Antonio.

Getting Involved

While at UT San Antonio, Grace took advantage of the support the First Generation and Transfer Programs provides students like her. “I wouldn’t have been able to adjust to college without this resource, and I wish more students knew about it,” she said. Grace eventually became a mentor with the program herself. Wanting to get more involved on campus and develop professionally, she also served as president of the Student Psychology Association.

Grace received helpful insight into her future career by conducting research with the THRIVE lab. This lab focuses on studying trauma psychology, mainly in the veteran population. Her experiences there also led her to present at various research conferences, furthering her professional development.
