Get to Know Maria

When Maria Wence first started at UT San Antonio, she was testing what it’d be like to live away from home at a school that wasn’t too far, planning to transfer down the road. However, she quickly found a home among her fellow Roadrunners and a clear path to a bright future, leading to her decision to stay. She knew she wanted to be a journalist from a young age, and during her time studying communication at UT San Antonio, she’s only become more confident in her career path.

Getting Involved

At first, Maria kept to herself on campus and didn’t participate in any clubs or extracurriculars. One of her professors suggested she attend a meeting for the Paisano—a student-run newspaper—to develop skills she’d need to become a journalist. She decided to go and soon became a dedicated member where she gained experience in crafting articles and developing her writing skills. Alongside her work at the Paisano, she also became a student worker for UT San Antonio’s Enrollment Marketing team, where she learned the multimedia side of journalism by working both behind and in front of the camera.

Getting Career Ready

To level up her skills, Maria is interning at KSAT 12, a local news station. She works with real reporters, gets practice being on camera, helps write scripts, and learns how the newsroom runs its social media. Every day gives her a clearer picture of what a journalism career looks like, and it makes her even more excited for her future.
