Get to Know Matthew
Matthew Rodriguez is a Junior at UTSA who’s making the most out of his time as a Roadrunner. His love of athletics led him to choose the Sports track for his marketing degree and intern at UTSA Athletics. He’s doing all he can to gain the skills needed to pursue a career in the world of professional sports.
Pursuing a Passion
Matthew’s father is a large part of what inspired him to choose his degree. As a kid, he encouraged Matthew to participate in sports like football, and his own Bachelor’s degree was in Business Administration. This made a Sports Marketing degree the best choice for him to follow in his father’s footsteps while also pursuing his own passion.
Professional Development
On top of his studies, Matthew is also an intern with the UTSA Athletics marketing team. Attending a Roadrunner Days event in which he was able to hear from a current UTSA Athletics marketing intern motivated Matthew to go home and apply for the internship himself through Handshake. Now he’s learning hands-on how to navigate the world of sports marketing through things like social media and game operations. As Matthew puts it, “it’s our job to make sure that the fan experience is absolutely wonderful.” This internship has also taught Matthew how to effectively communicate and work within a team, something he can carry with him to any career.
Looking to the Future
As for his future, Matthew would be happy with any job in the sports world. “I want to get my foot in the door, even if it’s starting at the bottom.” However, his true goal is to work in game operations, particularly for a professional league like the Super Bowl or World Cup, or even running games for our San Antonio Spurs.
