Get to Know Sophia

Sophia Kayani’s college journey had some unexpected turns, not the least of which was becoming a mother her junior year. Thanks to the support she received at UT San Antonio, she was able to navigate being a parent and working as an esthetician alongside classes, leadership opportunities and professional development. She graduated with the confidence and tools she needed to start a successful career.

Getting Involved

Sophia attended UT San Antonio as an accounting major and found a passion for the field as well as a community within the Alvarez College of Business. In her first accounting class, she realized how easily she understood the concepts, which she credits the faculty for as much as her own affinity for numbers. She joined student organizations on campus like the Professional Businesswomen Society (PBWS), Accounting Professionals of Tomorrow and the Investment Society. She soon became president of PBWS, which allowed her to earn valuable leadership skills.

Professional Development

While at UT San Antonio, Sophia was chosen to travel to Prague for a two-week college immersion program and to Atlanta for a leadership development conference. Both experiences helped her grow professionally and as a leader while also giving her networking opportunities. While at the conference in Atlanta, she met a representative for BDO, a San Antonio accounting firm. Coincidentally, she’d already formed a connection with this company while attending the Alvarez College of Business Accounting, Finance and Economics Expo. Those connections helped her secure an internship with the company after graduation, paving the way for her future career.
