Get to Know Suyapa
First-generation graduate Suyapa Muñoz earned dual degrees in psychology and biology, with a concentration in neurobiology, from UTSA. Learn more about Suyapa and her dedication to making healthcare more accessible for all.
Advocating for Change
Suyapa is pursuing a career in healthcare—an ambition rooted in personal experience. Growing up as the daughter of an immigrant, she saw firsthand the stark disparity between health care systems in San Antonio and Honduras. This perspective fueled Suyapa’s devotion to helping others by making healthcare resources more accessible.
Serving with Purpose
While enrolled at UTSA, Suyapa interned at Close to Home, an organization dedicated to helping people experiencing homelessness. There, she shadowed and assisted doctors who volunteered their time to treat individuals without regular access to healthcare. Suyapa’s commitment led to an expanded role as a youth liaison, allowing her to further pursue her passion and make a greater impact in the community.
Getting Inspired
In addition to her professional experience, Suyapa joined the Global Health Research Laboratory as a research assistant under Katelyn Sileo, assistant professor of public health. Her major project focused on studying family planning intervention for couples in rural Uganda. Inspired by these valuable experiences, Suyapa hopes to continue supporting and engaging with the community by becoming a physician specializing in substance use and family medicine.
Now, Suyapa serves as a harm reduction service navigator at the Corazon Ministries Harm Reduction Center, an organization that provides access to medical, behavioral treatment, and social services for those in need. Through her education and research at UTSA, Suyapa continues to make a bold impact.
