San Antonio native Taylor Martin made it her mission to find her career path when she joined the UTSA College of Business.
Capping off her senior year with an exclamation point, her ambition and work ethic have resulted in a full-time job offer with JPMorgan Chase in New York City as an investment solutions analyst when she graduates in May 2020.
A finance major, Martin has accumulated a string of honors during her tenure at UTSA. She was named a Distinguished Business Student and a Forbes Under 30 Scholar this year. Active on campus, she is president of the National Association of Black Accountants and a member of the Investment Society.
Martin paved her path by actively pursuing professional development opportunities beginning her freshman year. She got her first taste for finance when she was chosen for the JPMorgan Chase Freshman Experience program.
Coming back from New York City, she was hungry to learn about the field of finance. From the advice of an Investment Society members, she reached out to Nathan Ramos, ’13, managing director of NR Capital Management, LLC. Ramos worked with her over the summer and taught her how to build financial models.
She later was chosen as a summer analyst intern with JPMorgan Chase her sophomore and junior years. She was one of 16 individuals selected for the sophomore internship program out of 2,800 applicants.
“New York City was a transformative experience,” said Martin, who is a member of the Honors College. “It was the first time I lived by myself, and I was immersed in a new culture with different people.”
Working on the wealth management and investment solutions teams, Martin worked on stock pitches and analysis and advanced to writing investment commentary and product strategy her junior year.
“You are given a lot of responsibility, but you have a lot of support,” said Martin, who was working 60-hour weeks. “It is a team-oriented culture. Seeing my work being used was invigorating. You have to constantly show how you are adding value.”
With her career path secured, Martin is using her last year at UTSA to follow her passions. She is currently starting a foundation with friends at the University of Michigan, working on a financial literacy project and mentoring freshmen business students.
“It is my time to give back now,” said Martin. “We should always be lifting others as we climb.
“UTSA’s finance department prepared me to do well. I’ve had great experiences at UTSA.”
