Get to Know Emilio

When Emilio decided he wanted to attend college in the United States, he had many options. UT San Antonio stood out to him for several reasons. The programs offered, the university’s culture and even the layout of the campus all pointed to a high-quality education housed in a welcoming community. His invitation to the Honors College only further solidified his decision to attend the university.

Choosing a Major

While Emilio was always good with numbers, he didn’t have full confidence in choosing finance as his major at first. He was even considering switching to something else like accounting, but his first class with Ron Sweet, a professor of practice in finance, opened his eyes to the real-world applications of the field. It was in that class that he decided majoring in finance was the right path for him.

Getting Career Ready

Emilio got involved on campus by joining groups like the Business Student Council and the Investment Society. Through those clubs, he made new friends and built up his confidence. He also gained meaningful networking opportunities. One of those opportunities was meeting the CEO of Santikos, a well‑known movie‑theater chain in San Antonio. He gained professional experience through opportunities like working as an accounting tutor, but his internships with Union Pacific Railroad turned out to be his most impactful experiences at UT San Antonio. Not only did he get firsthand experience in his field, but he was offered a full-time position with the company after graduation.
