You can also choose to specialize in a track for corporate finance, investment management or financial institutions. Tracks are declared after you’ve been admitted and have met with your academic advisor.

Admission Requirements

When you apply to UT San Antonio, you select the major you'd like to study. The choice of major will not impact if you get admitted to the University (all students must meet UT San Antonio's general admission requirements); however, some majors will require additional admission requirements to be able to declare the major your freshman year.

Finance: To major in Finance, you must meet UT San Antonio’s general admission requirements and have completed MAT 1053 Mathematics for Business (TCCN: MATH 1324) or higher with grade of C- or better. Students who do not meet these requirements, but meet general admission requirements, will be admitted into Business Studies, where students will be able to work towards meeting the pre-requisites needed to declare their business major.

Through one general scholarship application, you can automatically be considered for dozens of scholarships at UT San Antonio, including scholarships that are available for this major. If you are a student applying for admission, but have not yet been admitted, you may sign in and complete the Scholarship Hub’s General Application as long as you have authenticated your myUTSA ID and Passphrase. Distinguished Scholarship

UT San Antonio offers an automatic merit-based scholarship to incoming new freshman and transfer students who display exceptional scholastic achievement in high school by the priority deadline. Non-resident and international students awarded a Distinguished Scholarship for a minimum of $1,000 for the academic year will be granted a waiver for non-resident tuition if scholarship eligibility is maintained. This means out-of-state and international students could pay in-state tuition! For fall admitted freshmen, this scholarship is valued up to $20,000 for up to four years. For fall or spring admitted transfer students, this scholarship is valued up to $6,000 for up to two years. Renewal eligibility must be maintained and funding must be available.

Earn Your CFA Level 1 Certification

As a partner of the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Institute, UT San Antonio offers Finance students the opportunity to prepare for and complete the CFA Level 1 exam while still pursuing their undergraduate degree. With over 70% of the exam content covered by the finance department’s curriculum, you’ll be well-equipped to tackle this globally-recognized certification. The Finance BBA at UT San Antonio builds the skills to interpret financial data and make sound decisions about investments, funding and risk. You’ll study how financial markets work and how organizations manage their capital to meet their investment goals. Key areas include corporate finance, investments, financial markets and institutions and financial analytics.

Students can explore opportunities such as internships and experiential learning, career coaching and recruitment support, and student organizations and networking to build experience. These opportunities will help you apply your classroom concepts to practice, improve your soft skills and find internships and jobs.

In the UT San Antonio BBA in Finance, you’ll complete a mix of required finance courses and upper-division electives that build both technical knowledge and practical skills. This program’s required major courses include an introductory course (Principles of Business Finance), courses associated with each finance track that you can pursue (Intermediate Corporate Finance, Principles of Investment, Interest Rates/Money/Banking, Computer Modeling of Financial Applications, Introduction to Data Science for Finance Majors) and the capstone course (Cases and Problems in Finance).

These courses help you build a strong base in financial analysis, investments and strategic decision-making. You’ll also choose upper-division finance electives based on your interests. Depending on your track, you can take courses such as Investment Portfolio Management, Data Analytics in Finance, Introduction to FinTech, Credit Analysis, Financial Institutions Management, Risk Management and International Finance.

This program provides direct preparation for the CFA Level I exam. As a CFA Institute partner, the finance program at UT San Antonio gives you the opportunity to prepare for and complete the CFA Level I exam while you are still earning your undergraduate degree, and more than 70% of the exam content is covered by the finance curriculum. Scholarships may also be available to help offset some exam-related costs.

In the UT San Antonio Finance BBA, you can gain hands-on experience through both internships and applied learning opportunities. This program includes FIN 4933: Internship in Finance, which requires supervised work with a finance professional and gives you the opportunity to apply classroom concepts in a real-world setting.

You can also build real-world experience through experiential opportunities such as the Student-Managed Investment Fund, where undergraduate and graduate finance students help manage a $2.5 million UTIMCO portfolio with faculty guidance. In that experience, you can practice portfolio management, due diligence, risk-reward analysis and financial tools such as Bloomberg, FactSet and Capital IQ. Internships, student organizations and experiential learning opportunities are also available to help you apply what you learn beyond the classroom.

With a UT San Antonio BBA in Finance, you can prepare for careers in areas such as investment banking, corporate finance, equity analysis, portfolio management, real estate and financial institutions.
