The University of Texas at San Antonio offers public health-related, career-oriented programming including bachelor’s and certificate programs, to support both degree-seeking and non-degree-seeking students of the community of Laredo. These programs are offered through the UTSA College for Health, Community & Policy and the UTSA University College, both in-person and online, at the University of Texas Education & Research Center at Laredo.

CERTIFICATE
Community Health Worker Certificate
Offered by: UTSA College for Health, Community & Policy
Starting: Summer 2022
The Community Health Worker Certificate is designed to help members of the community to provide health-related information to their fellow community members. This information can be disease-specific, treatment-related, or even facilitating access to care and insurance. Students are trained to work in a variety of community settings such as health educators, coordinators, and advocates.
Students must take five courses (15 credit hours) to earn this certificate and could complete the certificate within one to two semesters. Courses that will be taught at the UT Education & Research Center at Laredo this summer and fall are:
- Introduction to Community and Public Health (required course)
- Special Studies in Health: Wellness and Health Promotion (required course)
- Special Studies in Health: Health Administration (required course)
- Health Disparities (required course)
- Emotional Wellness (elective)

Multidisciplinary Studies

Customized bachelor’s degree program that allows students to combine three disciplines into a coherent course of study to meet career and educational goals. Disciplines include Health, Sociology, Communication, and Business.
Several courses are available online; however, the following courses will be taught at the UT Education & Research Center at Laredo starting this fall:

Who should apply for these programs?
The Community Health Worker certificate is designed for students who are interested in helping their communities learn more about health and how to live healthier lives.
Students who have an associate’s degree or a significant amount of earned college hours can transfer credits to UTSA to take advantage of our Multidisciplinary Studies degree (MDST). The MDST offers flexibility and several specializations, including Health and Sociology, for students to complete their bachelor’s degree in preparation for the workforce.
What’s the difference between the certificate program and the bachelor’s degree?
Certificate programs are narrower in scope and shorter in duration than bachelor’s degrees. Certificates can either supplement your existing degree or provide a new skill needed for your career.
This Community Health Worker Certificate is designed to provide community health worker training to community members as a stackable certificate that could be applied with the addition of one or more focus areas to qualify for a Multidisciplinary Study (MDST) bachelor’s degree.
What will I learn?
Community health worker training is designed to develop skills in members of the community to provide health-related information to their fellow community members. This information can be disease-specific, treatment-related, or even facilitating access to care and insurance.
The Multidisciplinary Studies degree program (B.A.) combines three disciplines into a coherent course of study to meet career and educational goals. It is ideal for students whose interests lie in multiple subject areas or those pursuing a career path that does not clearly align with a traditional discipline. Disciplines include Health, Sociology, Communication, and Business.
Am I eligible to apply?
Applicants interested in the certificate program must meet the following requirements:
- Must have at least a C average (2.25 CGPA on a 4.0 scale) on the last 30 undergraduate hours attempted.
- Must be eligible to return to the most recent institution.
Applicants interested in a degree program must meet UTSA’s transfer requirements. Please note there are no UTSA programs offered for first-time freshmen at the UT Education & Research center at Laredo.

Will there be more UTSA programs offered at Laredo?
UTSA is currently working on offering a Healthcare Leadership Multidisciplinary Studies degree, estimated availability Spring 2023. This degree will be designed for students with an associate degree in health occupations (e.g. AAS) to continue their education and complete their bachelor’s degree in preparation for jobs as team leaders and care coordinators.
Can I transfer courses from other universities attended?
Yes, you can transfer courses from other universities and colleges. Please note that a maximum of 66 hours from a community college can be applied toward a degree. How much does it cost?
Students will pay the same university tuition based on the number of credits they are enrolled in each semester. Please refer to the UTSA Tuition & Fees page for details and to use the Tuition & fees estimator tool. Currently, mandatory tuition and fees for a Texas resident taking two courses (6 credit hours) this summer would estimate to $2,399.
Please note under state law, The University of Texas Board of Regents is authorized to set tuition. The UT Board of Regents may consider proposed tuition and fee increases at an upcoming board meeting. Dollar amounts below are estimates based on the current academic year and could be adjusted later.
Is financial aid available?
Students must be enrolled in a degree-seeking or teacher certification program in order to be eligible to receive financial aid. The Community Health Worker certificate is a non-degree seeking program so, at this time, there is no financial aid available for this program.
How do I apply for financial aid?
If you’re eligible to receive financial aid, you can complete your FAFSA application even before you submit an admission application. If you are eligible for the TASFA, you can submit your application once you’ve applied and have your myUTSA ID and passphrase. Please note: you must be admitted to be offered financial aid.
