The Community Health Worker certificate is designed for students who are interested in helping their communities learn more about health and how to live healthier lives.

Students who have an associate’s degree or a significant amount of earned college hours can transfer credits to UTSA to take advantage of our Multidisciplinary Studies degree (MDST). The MDST offers flexibility and several specializations, including Health and Sociology, for students to complete their bachelor’s degree in preparation for the workforce.

Certificate programs are narrower in scope and shorter in duration than bachelor’s degrees. Certificates can either supplement your existing degree or provide a new skill needed for your career.

This Community Health Worker Certificate is designed to provide community health worker training to community members as a stackable certificate that could be applied with the addition of one or more focus areas to qualify for a Multidisciplinary Study (MDST) bachelor’s degree.

Community health worker training is designed to develop skills in members of the community to provide health-related information to their fellow community members. This information can be disease-specific, treatment-related, or even facilitating access to care and insurance.

The Multidisciplinary Studies degree program (B.A.) combines three disciplines into a coherent course of study to meet career and educational goals. It is ideal for students whose interests lie in multiple subject areas or those pursuing a career path that does not clearly align with a traditional discipline. Disciplines include Health, Sociology, Communication, and Business.

Applicants interested in the certificate program must meet the following requirements:

• Must have at least a C average (2.25 CGPA on a 4.0 scale) on the last 30 undergraduate hours attempted.
• Must be eligible to return to the most recent institution.

Applicants interested in a degree program must meet UTSA’s transfer requirements. Please note there are no UTSA programs offered for first-time freshmen at the UT Education & Research center at Laredo.

Students interested in the Community Health Worker Certificate from the UT Education & Research Center at Laredo will need to apply as a non-degree seeking student on ApplyTexas.

Follow the steps outlined on our Non-Degree Seeking Admission page and you must answer YES to the question “Will you be participating in a program that offers courses at the University of Texas Education & Research Center at Laredo?”

Students interested in the Multidisciplinary Studies degree from the UT Education & Research Center at Laredo will need to apply as a transfer student on ApplyTexas.

Follow the steps outlined on our Transfer Admission page and select “Multidisciplinary Studies” as the choice major and you must answer YES to the question “Will you be participating in a program that offers courses at the University of Texas Education & Research Center at Laredo?”

UTSA is currently working on offering a Healthcare Leadership Multidisciplinary Studies degree, estimated availability Spring 2023.  This degree will be designed for students with an associate degree in health occupations (e.g. AAS) to continue their education and complete their bachelor’s degree in preparation for jobs as team leaders and care coordinators.

Yes, you can transfer courses from other universities and colleges. Please note that a maximum of 66 hours from a community college can be applied toward a degree. Students will pay the same university tuition based on the number of credits they are enrolled in each semester. Please refer to the UTSA Tuition & Fees page for details and to use the Tuition & fees estimator tool. Currently, mandatory tuition and fees for a Texas resident taking two courses (6 credit hours) this summer would estimate to $2,399.

Please note under state law, The University of Texas Board of Regents is authorized to set tuition. The UT Board of Regents may consider proposed tuition and fee increases at an upcoming board meeting. Dollar amounts below are estimates based on the current academic year and could be adjusted later.

Students must be enrolled in a degree-seeking or teacher certification program in order to be eligible to receive financial aid. The Community Health Worker certificate is a non-degree seeking program so, at this time, there is no financial aid available for this program.

If you’re eligible to receive financial aid, you can complete your FAFSA application even before you submit an admission application. If you are eligible for the TASFA, you can submit your application once you’ve applied and have your myUTSA ID and passphrase. Please note: you must be admitted to be offered financial aid.
