Why Pursue a Master's Degree in Sociology
Graduate students have the opportunity to acquire a knowledge base in sociological methods, theory and in areas of growing community concern. These areas include health, aging, civil-military relations, socioeconomic development, gender issues, and race and ethnic relations. Students will have the necessary research skills to define social issues and problems, select data collection techniques, establish appropriate analysis methods, develop statistical reports, and undertake policy analyses for businesses, governmental agencies, and nonprofit organizations.

Applications are submitted through the UT San Antonio Graduate Application. Please upload all required documents (listed below) on your UT San Antonio Graduate Application. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure completion and submission of the application, a nonrefundable application fee, and all required supporting documents are on file with UT San Antonio by the appropriate application deadline.

The Master’s in Sociology is designed for students seeking to understand and address the complex social structures and demographic trends shaping our world. The program begins with coursework in Sociological Theory, Research Design and Quantitative Research Methods, equipping students with analytical tools to explore forces behind population dynamics and social change.
With crossover classes in demography, students gain a deeper knowledge of data applications and applied research. Courses like Demography of Inequality and Poverty, Demography of Race and Ethnicity, Family Demography and Demography of Adolescence and the Transition to Adulthood provide an understanding of the intersections between population data and social experiences.
To complete the degree, students choose from one of three options: the Thesis Option for those pursuing research and academic scholarship, the Internship Option for students seeking applied experience in community or organizational settings, or the Exit Seminar Option, which includes a written exam.
Courses are offered as early as 2:00 PM and as late as 5:30 PM. Graduate courses meet once a week.
