Get to Know Cory
A Top Scholar in UTSA’s Honors College and a San Antonio native, Cory Nguyen double majored and graduated with bachelor’s degrees in biology and statistics and data science. Through networking, study abroad and financial support at UTSA, Cory earned a high-quality education and launched his career as a data scientist at Chevron.
Affording an Excellent Education
With 100% coverage of tuition, fees, room and board for all four years, Cory had the financial freedom as a Top Scholar to explore his passions and grow as a leader without worrying about the cost. “I had gotten a taste of leadership and leading a group as an Eagle Scout, and I wanted more of that,” he said. “Top Scholar has leadership as one of its pillars and offers opportunities to be a leader in San Antonio.”
Learning Through Experience
Beyond serving the community, Cory also actively engaged in vaccine research, studied abroad in South Korea and served as both a mentor and mentee on campus. UTSA’s focus on experiential learning equipped him with marketable job skills and ultimately helped him land a role with Chevron, a leading energy company. “All of it comes together to create an experiential package where students can take their educational journey and make it their own,” he said.
Succeeding in Graduate Studies
After graduation, Cory continued his educational journey and earned his Master’s in Business Administration (MBA). The Top Scholar program and holistic development at UTSA laid the groundwork for his graduate studies and his career as a data scientist. “I felt that my education, especially around statistics, was pretty competitive when I went on to the UT Business School program,” he said. “Even now in my current work at Chevron, I feel like my undergrad education and my foundation for statistics was very competitive.”
Forging a Family Legacy
Both Cory’s dad and brother are UTSA alumni as well. Inspired by his brother’s success as a Top Scholar, Cory’s younger brother, Cameron Nguyen, followed suit and applied for the program. Cameron’s experience at UTSA served as a catalyst for his post-college achievements. After graduation, he landed a dream job with Google. “Cameron saw that I was growing from the program, and he had a chance to do the same thing,” Cory said. “And my closest friend was now in college with me, and we got to continue to do things together.”
