Transfer FAQs

You’re considered a transfer student at UT San Antonio if you’ve previously earned college credit after completing high school or earning your GED—and you’re now looking to continue your undergraduate studies with us. Whether your credits come from a community college or another university, if you’re pursuing a bachelor’s degree or looking to take courses for credit at UT San Antonio, you’ll apply as a transfer student.

Note: college credit received while in high school (dual credit) does not count.

It’s a common question—and a common misconception! There’s no minimum number of college credits required to transfer to UT San Antonio. You can apply no matter how many credits you’ve earned after high school or your GED.

That said, there is a limit on how many credits UT San Antonio can accept from a community college. According to university policy, students can apply up to 66 transfer credit hours from a community college toward their degree. This ensures that a required portion of your coursework is completed at UT San Antonio as part of earning your bachelor’s degree.

Yes! If you’re currently part of the AlamoPROMISE program at one of the Alamo Colleges, you may be eligible for the AlamoPROMISE to UT San Antonio Bold Promise as long as you meet certain eligibility criteria at UT San Antonio. This is a tuition assistance program designed to make continuing your education at UT San Antonio more affordable.

This program covers 100% of tuition and mandatory fees for up to four fall and spring semesters (within two years) for eligible students who maintain program requirements.

There’s no separate application—if you’re a Texas resident who meets the eligibility criteria, you’ll be automatically considered for this opportunity.

To review the full eligibility requirements and learn more, visit our One Stop page.

UT San Antonio does not offer a fee waiver for transfer applications. All transfer applicants are required to pay the non-refundable $75 application fee when they apply.

However, we understand that some students may be facing financial hardships. If you have extenuating circumstances, you may request a fee deferral, which allows you to pay the fee at a later time. To explore this option, simply email the UT San Antonio Transfer Admissions team for assistance.

“WIP” stands for Work In Progress—a transcript that shows you’re currently enrolled in courses at the time you submit your application to UT San Antonio. And yes, it’s absolutely okay to apply while you’re still taking classes!

If your transcript includes WIP courses, don’t worry—our admissions team can still review your application, as long as your transfer GPA meets our admission requirements.

Here’s what you’ll need to do:

  • Submit your current transcript (even if it includes WIP courses) when you apply.
  • Once your final grades are posted, submit an updated transcript from your current school. This helps us finalize your admission and apply new credits toward your degree.

You can begin your transfer application to UT San Antonio through either ApplyTexas or the Common App — whichever platform you prefer!

When starting completing your application, make sure to select “Transfer” student status. This ensures the correct application form appears. If you don’t select this, the system may default to the freshman application by mistake.

Note: If you used ApplyTexas or Common Application to apply to college previously, please keep in mind that you may need to create a new account or update your application type and/or profile with current information.

To find out which of your credits will transfer to UT San Antonio, we recommend using our Transfer Credit Calculator.

Pro Tip: Have your most up-to-date transcript handy while using the calculator. You’ll need to reference course numbers and other details to get the best results.
